Caracuel's Lagoon

Add it to your travel notebook

This lagoon is a markedly seasonal wetland located next to the Sierra de Perabad, in the region of Campo de Calatrava. It is formed in a depression produced by underground volcanic explosions.

The Caracuel’s Lagoon is the main lagoon of a lagoon complex which also includes the ‘Doña Elvira’, ‘Perabad’, ‘Dehesa’, the ‘Estación’, and other smaller ones.

It is particularly important from a botanical point of view, as there are interesting plant communities that change seasonally as the depth of the body of water varies, which supports a wide variety of bird life, as well as abundant lake vegetation, as its water does not receive any polluted input.

From the lagoon you can see, silhouetted against the horizon, the beautiful remains of Caracuel Castle.
